UI/UX Design Challenge: Designing Services in reducing waste in Indonesia
Disclaimer: This case study is part of the Design Challenge and also part of my personal learning process. There is no connection in making a real application. I researched to find Pain Points from Users and create ideation in the form of a service application.
Introduction
The purpose of this case study is to create a service/application that can reduce the impact of waste problems in Indonesia.
I have goals for this Case Study service, which include:
- Learn about analyzing problems and translating them into designs.
- Conducting User Research exercises includes: Problem analysis, Identifying User needs and Paint Points, Ideation, designing the user flow, creating the Wireframe (both in terms of users who have waste problems as parties asking for help and parties assist, Prototyping, Validation Ideas.
Problem Analysis
Based on data obtained from the Indonesian Ministry of Life and Forestry (KLHK), the average amount of waste production in Indonesia reaches 175,000 tons of waste per day, equivalent to 64 million tons of waste per year (organic, inorganic, wasted food, toxic waste, etc.) with a waste sorting system that is not good.
For the types of waste in making cases in this application, they are classified into 3 based on their characteristics, namely: Organic, Inorganic, and Toxic waste. Here is the source I attach via This Link (in Indonesian Language)
Identify User Needs
I tried to research the internet regarding the waste problem in Indonesia. After digging deeper, one of the problems is that besides the poor awareness of the residents, 79% of them do not want to be bothered. Here I also attach the source Link (In Indonesian Language).
Making List of User Requirements
Based on the article data above, I made a list of User requirements, including:
- Connecting the Waste Owner with the Receiving Party (both Government Agencies, PT, and Individuals) aim to be recycled by the recipient.
- Connecting the Garbage Owner with the Receiving Party based on Distance.
- Connecting the owner of the trash owner with the Receiving Party based on the first active one will chat when there is a notification on the recipient.
- Communicate either by chatting or via telephone (in this case using a cellphone number).
Finding A Solution (Ideation)
Based on the problem and the list of user needs, I think if there is an application service that has the following solutions:
- membuat suatu layanan yang mempertemukan Owner si sampah ini dengan pihak penerima sampah.
If illustrated in an illustration is as follows:
Designing User Flow
In this design there are several User Flow flows:
1. Flow in User Registration
2. Flow in requesting User assistance
3. Flow in providing assistance:
Wireframe Sketch
At this stage, I tried to sketch the low fidelity Wireframe using a pencil

High Fidelity Wireframe
After the Wireframe sketch, the next step is to make the High Fidelity Wireframe which in this stage the design is made in a form that is exactly like the original in the application and the shape is made into a precise shape.
Below is the High Fidelity Wireframe of User Registration
Below is the High Fidelity Wireframe in asking for User assistance
Below is a High Fidelity Wireframe for assistance
Prototype
After the High Fidelity Wireframe is finished, the next step is to change the High Fidelity Design and unite it into components between pages that form the Interaction between pages.
The following is the Prototype Process of users who have registered this application and immediately ask for help from the user (as well as additional features that I deliberately added to beautify other pages to strengthen the interaction between users in terms of promotion in the notification home, history, and profile).
The following is a prototype of registration and requesting user assistance
Here is a Prototype giving Help to Users
That’s the Study Case Design Challenge this time, if there are additional entries, questions or suggestions can be written in the comments column below.
